Although I haven't made any pottery in a couple of years, my lastest efforts were cone 5 floating blue. This glaze can be difficult to work with, but is very beautiful and satisfying when everything goes well. The recipe called for cone 6, but my tests to cone 6 were unsatisfying. The colors were very drab, some not even blue, but ugly green. I kept experimenting with ramp times, soak times, and final temperature, and came up with these results. I have been able to repeat them, so I am satisfied with these cone 5 results.
Coiled Face Jug
Made by adding coil after coil of clay until the jug was the height I wanted The jug was made over several days, and allowed to set a while to let the clay strengthen a bit befor adding more coils. Then the facial features were added, and fired to cone 5.
I made this mixing bowl for my wife Donna, who supports my efforts.
